Events and Parish Activities

For the most current and upcoming events, check out the online Parish Bulletins selecting the desired bulletin date.

This Committee is an informal group—anyone interested in the organization of various pro-life activities throughout the year. The events we normally organize include the Chain of Life (October), Pro Life Sunday (May), Pennies for Life (all year round), and the Hike for Life (April). This year Assumption Parish pledged over $1,000 for the Hike for Life. March for Life (May) Rally on Parliament Hill authorized march through the streets of Ottawa and back to the Hill. On May 14, 2009 over 12,000 people took part to remind everyone of the killing of babies through abortion and we pray there will be an end to this killing.
These activities are in support of Campaign Life and Action Life. Anyone interested, young or older, please contact the Pro Life Representative listed in the Parish Bulletin.
For more information, please send e-mail to Frank Barrett.

Parish Altar Servers

Hey kids & teens (parents please take note): How would you like to help us out during mass on Sundays by becoming an Altar Server? You could carry the cross or the candles during the processions, and even get to hold the prayer book for the priest! Most important of all is that you would have the honour to prepare the Altar for the blessing of the Holy Sacrament. All you need to do to become an Altar Server is to make sure that you have already received your sacraments of First Communion, Reconciliation, and Confirmation. If your parents say it’s okay and this sounds like something you’d like to do, why not contact the Parish Office at 613.746.8503 and leave your name and telephone number so Melchor can call you back.

Sunday School
From September to June at the 10:30 am Mass the parish offers Sunday school to the children aged 3 and above. They are kept for 30 minutes and are taught prayer, Christian fellowship and are read bible stories. The younger children colour pictures based on the themes discussed in that weeks bible reading. The older children discuss the gospel of the day and how the gospels’ themes apply to their daily lives. During this time the parents are free to enjoy the readings and the homily in the church.
The Children’s Mass
To instill a sense of pride and belonging to the parish we have dedicated the 2nd Sunday of every month at the 10:30 am Mass as the Children’s Mass. The children are responsible for the welcome, the announcements, the readings, the intentions as well as the collection. The Children’s liturgy committee has worked with them very hard in the last few years and are very proud of their accomplishments. The children look forward to these Masses and there are always many children volunteers who are eager to be a part of the Mass.
All of these special children-based activities are in place to show the children that they are a necessary, vital part of the parish community and that their participation is greatly valued and encouraged.
